September 2007, the firm converted from a traditional partnership
structure to a Limited Liability Partnership to help attract the best
possible talent to the firm and further its strategic development.

Firm acts for clients throughout the United Kingdom and Europe as well

other related services through its associated businesses. The firm also
provides consultancy to assist clients in identifying and exploiting
the business opportunities available to them. Reeves+Neylan LLP is one of the oldest and most respected
professional firms in Kent and can trace its roots back to the turn of
the 20th century. The first recorded mention of the firm appears in the
register of practising accountants of 1897 where Frank Reeves is first
recorded as being a sole practitioner working from an office at 3
Drapers Gardens, just off Moorgate. Although practising in London,
Reeves lived in Canterbury and around 1901/2 opened an office in
Canterbury High Street. With the recruitment of JHB Young soon after
the First War the firm became Reeves & Young and in 1923 moved to
39-40 St Margaret's Street, just a couple of doors away from R+N's
present Canterbury office.
At the same time the Canterbury office was established, another firm
was also opening for business - Neylan & Co. They occupied premises
just along from Reeves & Young on the corner of St Margaret's
Street and Hawks Lane in a building that now forms part of the firm's
existing premises. In addition to their respective Canterbury offices,
Reeves & Young had an office in Whitstable whilst Neylan & Co
had one in Dover.
The two firms continued in friendly competition until 1967 when they
amalgamated to form Reeves & Neylan. From this time the firm began
to expand by a process of mergers and new office openings. First was a
new office in Sandwich, and one in Deal following the merger with Dixon
& Co. in 1969. The firm's presence in north east Kent was further
strengthened in 1974 when the firm merged with the Margate practice of
Harold Thompson Baxter & Co., a presence further consolidated
thirteen years later with the opening of the office in Ramsgate in
November 1987.
As well as a growing presence in the east of the county, the firm
looked to broaden its horizons in the other direction and took
advantage of the growth of business in the north and west of Kent by
the opening of new offices in Sittingbourne and Ashford in 1975 and
1989 respectively.
For many years the firm was winning more and more clients north of
the border in the rich farming area of Angus and in 1978 the decision
was made to open an office in Scotland and in the February of the
following year the Forfar office opened. A second office opened in
Perth in January 1992 and a third in Inverurie in 1994. With the
increasing workload and rising cost of servicing the three offices from
Kent, it was decided that from April 1996 the Scottish offices would
operate on an autonomous basis but still using the excellent reputation
that the name of Reeves & Neylan had in the area.
Over a number of years, the Ashford office had increasingly focused
on agricultural and estate business and in 1998 moved away from R+N to
pursue a more independent course under the name of Chavereys. In 1997,
Reeves & Neylan merged with Judkins in Rochester and two years
later Reeves & Neylan amalgamated with the Sittingbourne-based
Chartered Accountancy practice Brian Elvy & Co. The Sittingbourne
and Rochester offices then merged to form a single practice and
relocated to a new office at the prestigious Chatham Maritime
development, a prime position to serve North Kent, whilst continuing to
strengthen the firm's presence as the largest accountancy practice in
the Medway area.
In 2002, the Ramsgate office team moved down to the Dover office to
form the East Kent Group along with the Deal and Sandwich offices and
so strengthen the firm's presence in south Kent whilst retaining strong
links with Thanet.
The firm's merger in May 2004 with the
London Bridge firm of Ashdens means that it once again is open for
business in London, over 100 years since Frank Reeves first opened his
doors. Now housed in modern offices on London Bridge Walk, immediately
adjacent to London Bridge Station, it offers a convenient location to
meet clients as well as do business. 2004 was also a momentous year for
the firm when it won the Best Tax Team in a Medium Size firm at the
LexisNexis UK Tax Awards against some very stiff competition. Its
success was consolidated when it repeated the feat a year later,
recieving the top prize for Best Large Practice Tax Team at the 2005
Awards
In 2005, the firm took the decision to relocate its
successful Forensic Accounting to its Canterbury office. This gave the
team one to one access to the resources and expertise within the firm's
largest office. In addition the team has also established a base in the
London office giving better access to their substantial London client
base.
By the end of April 2007, all staff from the Deal and
Sandwich offices and many from Dover moved to join the larger
Canterbury office. This development was driven by the need to
centralise specialist skills and the challenges of recruiting and
retaining the best possible staff in smaller offices. Additional office
space in Canterbury was obtained, increasing by 50% the area available
in the city and giving the firm the capacity for expansion.
In
September 2007, the firm converted from the traditional partnership
structure to a Limited Liability Partnership to help further its
development objectives. In October 2007, Sterling Milne, Gatwick,
became part of the firm bringing 2 new partners, Paul Roe and Allan
Pinner, the expertise of additional staff and a strategically placed
new office.
